“Asaindhadum Mayil” is a composition by Ootukkaadu Venkatasubbaiyyer in Carnatic raga Simhendra Madhayamam, set to Adi talam. Western Piano and Violin tunes blend in with Carnatic singing of this song and the playing of the Veena to create a gentle fusion of classical music, arranged by Ashwin
Seshadri.
The piece starts with soft sounds of the piano playing Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major BWV 846, the poignant strains of the violin playing in complement. In a quick transition into Carnatic music, this is followed by the Veena playing Thanam or rhythmic improvisation in raga Simhendra Madhyamam. The Carnatic
vocalist then picks up the melody with a rendition of the Pallavi or the thematic line of the song “Asaindhadum Mayil” to the accompaniment of all the instruments. The singer goes on to the song’s Charanam, interspersed with western interludes on the piano and violin. This is followed by a korvai in the 'Damaru Yati' pattern and the final return to the Pallavi, before the Violin and Piano bring the recital to a close on a high note.
Team Ashwin Seshadri on Piano, Mayukha Kashyap on the Violin, Sruthi Sriram for Carnatic Vocal, Kavitha Jayaraman on the Veena and Nagaari (Mixing/Mastering) come together to perform this piece.
